SIRIUS XM to Broadcast Live From the NAACP’s 101st Annual Convention

SIRIUS XM Radio announced that it will broadcast live from the NAACP National Convention in Kansas City, Missouri, bringing listeners inside this historic gathering and interviewing notable guests and seminal figures from the African-American community.

The Power (XM 169/SIRIUS Internet Radio 820) and P.O.T.U.S., SIRIUS XM’s non-partisan channel dedicated to “The Politics of the United States” (SIRIUS 110/XM 130) are scheduled to carry First Lady Michelle Obama’s speech in its entirety from this year’s event marking the NAACP’s 101st anniversary as an organization dedicated to pursuing civil rights.

SIRIUS XM host Mark Thompson will host his daily show Make it Plain live July 12-15 from the convention, interviewing political and community leaders and taking calls from listeners across the country to explore the day’s speeches, events and happenings. On July 15, Thompson will host a special youth forum on his show featuring representatives from the NAACP Youth & College Division, exploring topics such as future of the NAACP and youth perspectives on public policy. In addition, NAACP officials will make a special announcement on Make it Plain about an upcoming March on Washington, DC.

Make it Plain airs Monday – Friday from 5:00 – 8:00 pm ET on SIRIUS Left channel 146 and from 6:00 – 8:00 pm ET on America Left XM channel 167. On the show Thompson speaks passionately about political, social and economic issues. Thompson is nationally known for his work with the NAACP as founder of the NAACP Metropolitan Police and Criminal Justice Review Task Force for the DC Branch, emcee of the Million Man March, and founder of the Umoja Party. He is an ordained minister.

SIRIUS XM’s Joe Madison will cover the convention throughout the week from Washington, D.C. on his live, daily show with guests including NAACP President Ben Jealous and incoming NAACP President Roslyn Brock. Joining Madison in advance of his appearance at the convention will be actor Lou Gossett, Jr., to discuss how black producers control filming and distribution of movies about historically black heroes.

Madison’s show airs live Monday – Friday from 6:00 am – 10:00 am ET on The Power, XM channel 169/SIR 820. Madison is recognized as a human and civil rights activist, abolitionist against slavery in Southern Sudan, television commentator, columnist, lecturer, labor and corporate spokesman, musician, and athlete. He is the former executive director of the Detroit NAACP and was later appointed director of the national NAACP political action department.

SIRIUS XM Radio announced that it will broadcast live from the NAACP National Convention July 13 – July 16 in New York City. This year’s convention marks the NAACP’s 100th anniversary as an organization dedicated to pursuing civil rights.

SIRIUS XM hosts Joe Madison and Mark Thompson–longtime activists and leading African-American talk show hosts–will broadcast their live daily shows from the event, bringing listeners inside this historic gathering and interviewing notable guests and seminal figures from the African-American community.

Joe Madison’s live daily call-in show airs from 6:00 – 10:00 am ET on The Power, XM channel 169. Madison uses his microphone to bring attention to social injustices here and abroad, challenging his listeners to take action. Madison’s guest lineup for next week’s shows from the convention includes Colin Powell, Charles Rangel, Kweisi Mfume, Judge Greg Mathis, NAACP CEO Ben Jealous, Julian Bond, Vernon Jordan, Former VA Governor L. Douglas Wilder, and Myrlie Evers Williams.

Mark Thompson’s live daily show Make it Plain airs on SIRIUS XM’s liberal channels–SIRIUS Left channel 146 from 5:00 – 8:00 pm ET and from 6:00 – 8:00 pm ET on America Left XM channel 167. At the convention Thompson’s show will feature a dynamic mix of panel discussions, interviews with political and community leaders and calls from listeners across the country to explore the day’s speeches, events and happenings.

Joe Madison, also known as “The Black Eagle,” is recognized as a human and civil rights activist, abolitionist against slavery in Sudan and genocide in Darfur, television commentator, columnist, lecturer, labor and corporate spokesman, musician, and athlete. He is the former executive director of the Detroit NAACP and was later appointed director of the national NAACP political action department. During his nine years there he organized national voter registration campaigns that produced one million new voters. NAACP Convention delegates elected him to the national board of directors and re-elected him for the next fourteen years.

Mark Thompson’s career as a Washington, DC-based radio host spans 20 years. Thompson is nationally known for his work with the NAACP, as emcee of the Million Man March, founder of the Umoja Party, and an ordained minister. He also chairs the NAACP Metropolitan Police and Criminal Justice Review Task Force for the DC Branch. In that capacity, he co-authored legislation establishing the Board and Office of Police Complaints, and facilitated the beginning of an unprecedented study on racial profiling.
