SIRIUS XM Radio today announced that it will broadcast a special edition of Doctor Radio Reports: “9/11 – Doctors Who Answered the Call,” a one-hour roundtable discussion hosted by veteran journalist Perri Peltz on which world-class doctors from the NYU Langone Medical Center including H. Leon Pachter, MD, Chair, Department of Surgery; Mark Adelman, MD, Chief of the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery; and Lewis R. Goldfrank, MD, Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine.

On the show, these doctors — who were on duty on September 11, 2001 — reflect on their experiences from both medical and personal perspectives. Listeners will hear what it was like in the operating room when they got word of the disaster and started clearing out patients and prepping for what they thought would be the arrival thousands of victims to the logistics of emergency preparedness, and why they learned no one was prepared for a disaster of this magnitude. In addition, Glenn Asaeda, MD, Deputy Medical Director of the Fire Department of New York, a “first responder” on 9/11, joins the show to reflect on the communications and dispatch issues that day, as well as the trauma of seeing victims jump from the towers.

Doctor Radio Reports: “9/11 – Doctors Who Answered the Call” will air September 10 from 10:00 – 11:00 am ET on Doctor Radio, SIRIUS channel 114/XM channel 119.

Adelman lives with the lung damage he thought was caused by smoke inhalation but in reality was the pulverized remains of the World Trade Center buildings.

Lewis R. Goldfrank, MD: Herbert W. Adams Professor and Chair, Department of Emergency Medicine, NYU School of Medicine; Director, Emergency Department, Bellevue Hospital Center and NYU Langone Medical Center and Medical Director, New York City Poison Control Center.
Doctor Radio Reports: Is Your Kid High? will feature a panel of experts including leading NYU Langone Medical Center psychiatrist Dolores Malaspina MD, MPH, the Anita and Joseph Steckler Professor of Psychiatry, former chairman of the NYU Bellevue Department of Psychiatry and the co-host of Doctor Radio’s weekly psychiatry show. She now directs InSPIRES, an institute for Social and Psychiatric Initiatives at the NYU Langone Medical Center focused on preventing and curing severe mental disorders. The other featured guests are Deni Carise, MD, Chief Clinical Officer, Phoenix House, an internationally recognized leader in substance abuse treatment and research; and John Gilbride, Special Agent in Charge of New York Field Division of the DEA.

What drugs are kids using today? Where are they getting them? Is your medicine closet their supplier? What are the warning signs to look for, and what should you do when you think you know? How should parents talk to their kids about this sensitive subject? Teens can be moody – how can you tell if your kids are acting normal for their age or if their behavior is symptomatic of something more malignant?

Peltz and her guests will help parents navigate this important and complex topic, and arm them with three important lists they can take away:

Signs to look for in your child: how to read their moods, behavior patterns and friendships.

A checklist for making your home safe: a lot of the drugs kids are using today are coming right out of the medicine cabinets in their homes. Which drugs are those and what should you do to prevent abuse?

How to talk to kids about drugs: we now have a generation of parents who grew up in a drug culture, how should they answer the questions “Did you smoke marijuana?” and “Did you use drugs?”

Other questions and topics they will explore include: what are drug traffickers and dealers doing to lure kids? What if your kid asks you if you ever got high? Do you tell your kid if you want to try marijuana that they should try it at home? What are the trends and popular drugs these days? What is the DEA concerned about? What is a “pharm party?” How are kids getting drugs over the internet?

It’s sweeping the country and now you can get all the Swine Flu info you need on Sirius XM Radio! Today is a great day!!!!

The Top Ten Swine Flu FAQs at www.sirius.com/doctorradio

Doctor Radio is delivering the latest on swine flu–also known as
H1N1 flu– to millions of listeners across the country: medical news,
information and advice; preventative measures; how to identify
symptoms; the latest statistics and information on new technology such
as thermal imaging at airports that can detect people with fevers
exclusively reported by its all-medical-professional hosting team.

Doctor Radio–SIRIUS channel 114 and XM channel 119–features
live, call-in shows hosted by leading NYU Langone Medical Center
doctors from a vast array of fields including: child psychology; sexual
health; plastic surgery; emergency room medicine; cancer; heart health;
women’s health; dermatology; pediatrics; men’s health; diet and
nutrition; sports medicine; psychiatry; and more.

TOP 10 SWINE FLU FAQs by Dr. Marc K. Siegel, Medical Director, Doctor Radio:

What Is Swine Flu?

It’s a new strain of Influenza A, coming from a pig. The pig has
contracted one human strain, two pig strains, and one bird strain of
the flu. These all combined to make a new strain. Pigs are a Grand
Central Station for flu and other viruses.

What Are the Symptoms?

They’re similar to regular flu viruses, but the gastrointestinal
symptoms are more severe. They include: severe fatigue; headache; sore
throat; nasal congestion; vomiting; diarrhea; nausea

*Keep in mind regular flu season is over, so if you are experiencing flu-like symptoms, call your doctor.

How Do You Get It?

Mostly by infected people coughing/sneezing around you, also passing it by touch is likely.

How Is It Passed?

You can pass it on to other people by coughing/sneezing on or
near them, and possibly even touching surfaces that they later touch
(and then touch their face, eyes, nose, etc.).

How Is It Treated?

There’s no ‘cure’ for it, but you need:

Isolation/Rest

Fluids

Keep fever down

Consider anti-viral drugs such as Tamiflu and Relenza, but keep in mind this strain is resistant to many older anti-viral drugs.

How do you protect yourself?

Frequent hand-washing

Avoid sick people

Don’t cough or sneeze on others

Stay home if you’re sick!

Can You Catch It from Eating Pork Products?

While people in Mexico likely contracted this from handling
infected pigs, eating pork products should be safe. Keep in mind to
cook pork to a temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit to kill any
viruses.

Is Traveling Safe?

Travel to Mexico is still statistically quite safe; the problem
is still mainly one of perception, as the actual risk remains low. I
would also consider the psychological effects this could have on
children; consider what precautions they might take at airports, with
customs officers wearing masks, etc.

How Long Does it Last?

The virus can incubate a day or two before symptoms occur. It takes about a week to recover from the full-blown virus.

Is this real or hype? Do I need to be worried?

The danger is getting a lot of hype, but it is real. You probably don’t need to be worried, though.

Dr. Siegel is a practicing internist, an Associate Professor at
the NYU School of Medicine and a fellow in the Master Scholars Society
at New York University.

Every day Doctor Radio explores a wide range of intriguing
health and medical headlines, topics, and studies discussed
conversationally and interactively with SIRIUS XM listeners across the
country. The full programming lineup, sample audio clips, doctor host
bios, show descriptions can be found at www.sirius.com/doctorradio.
